About company

Algae production

Our company has a traditional interest to microalgal technologies as a potential extension of its industrial activities, since microalgae are becoming increasingly important sphere of economy worldwide. These organisms have a huge potential for numerous industrial applications including aquaculture, animal nutrition and health, human food additives, biofuels, cosmetics, pharmacy, etc.

“Microalgal biotechnology—today still in its infancy—can be seen as a gateway to a multibillion dollar industry. It has just started to tap the enormous biological resource and physiological potential of microalgal species growing in all ecological niches.”

Information about algae

The company mainly focuses on the exploration of the local, Latvian microalgal bio-resources. These efforts have already resulted in finding and selective isolating a number of economically valuable microalgal species and in the development of two commercial products. As our pilot projects have proved, the selected species of algae can be cultivated sustainably in large-scale, open-pond installations at the temperate climatic conditions of Latvia.

Products and applications

The first product (commercial name – Meitene-green) is currently produced in open-pond installations of the company. This product represents a mixture of algae belonging to the group of green algae (Chlorophyta: Chlorella-Monoraphidium-Scenedesmus spp.; cell size: 2- 16 µm). Now a frozen paste of Meitene-green is available. At the end of August 2011, a freeze- dried Meitene-green will be available too.

The other product (commercial name – Meitene-aqua) is based on the biomass of brown-colored microalgae belonging to the group of diatoms (Bacillariophyta). The diatoms we cultivate is rich in various polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) especially EPA (very important omega-3 fatty acid); cell size: 10 – 30 µm. It has been planned to start a mass production of Meitene-aqua this autumn (suitable seasonal conditions for its sustainable cultivation, as the results of our pilot project have shown).

Principal application:

  • Aquaculture:  Meitene-aqua - feeding the larval and post-larval stages of shrimp and mollusks; Meitene-green - primarily greening the water, enriching zooplankton to feed fish and other larvae;
  • Animal nutrition;
  • Pharmacy;
  • Cosmetics
